Welcome to our guide on upgrading Skills in Throne & Liberty.

In this guide, we will explain how skill upgrading works in TL. Skill Upgrading is also called Skill Levelling Up.

What Is Skill Upgrading in Throne & Liberty?

When you initially unlock skills in Throne & Liberty, they are in their basic form.

An important part of your character's progression is levelling up your skills to make them more powerful and add additional effects. Your Passives can also be levelled up in the same manner.

Fully levelling up your Skills can be a long process.

Skills need to be upgraded through many stages. After a certain amount of upgrades, the Skill's rarity increases, and after that point you'll need higher rarity skill books to continue upgrading them. Skills can be Quality (green), Rare (blue) or Epic (purple). The skills unlocked at lower levels tend to start off at Quality, whereas other skills will begin as Rare or Epic skills, which means they require fewer books to fully upgrade.

Each upgrade provides a small bonus to an aspect of the skill, usually a numerical value. Each time the Skill's tier increases (i.e. from Quality to Rare) you'll gain a more impactful benefit to the skill, such as a larger numerical boost or an entirely new effect.

You can mouse over a skill in your Skills menu to see a breakdown of upgrades, including what benefits each tier will grant, and how many more upgrades are required to reach the next tier.

How to Upgrade Skills in Throne & Liberty

Before upgrading your Skills in Throne & Liberty, you need to obtain Training Books. These are special items that are consumed when you upgrade your Skills. There are three types:

  • Quality Training Book - For upgrading Quality (green) skills
  • Rare Training Book - For upgrading Rare (blue) skills
  • Precious Training Book - For upgrading Epic (purple) skills

Passive Skills work in mostly the same way, but they instead require Improvement Books. These come in the same tiers as the Training Books mentioned above and work in the same way, except they're for Passives instead of Active Skills. Everything mentioned below for Training Books also applies to Improvement Books.

Quality and Rare Training Books can be purchased from Skill Research vendors, found in major settlements throughout Throne & Liberty.

To get Precious Books, you need to visit Senior Skills Researchers.

Crafting the books requires Parchments and Marinds of the same rarity as the book you want to craft, as well as some Sollant (gold).

You don't always need to craft the books, however. You can also get them from Quest/Codex Rewards, Contracts, Dungeons and Events, and some other sources.

Once you have collected some Training/Improvement Books, open your Skills menu to upgrade your Skill.

Skills that you can currently upgrade have a small up arrow on the left of their icon. Click on the icon to upgrade the skill. The number of Skill Books consumed when upgrading your Skill depends on how many times you have already upgraded the skill. To begin with, it costs 1 book per upgrade attempt, but after each level, the cost will increase by 1 book. When you reach the next rarity (for example, Rare instead of Quality), the cost becomes 1 Rare Book, and the process begins again.

Each time you press the upgrade button and consume the book(s), there is an RNG roll that determines how much progress to the next tier is gained.

The combination of these issues is what makes upgrading Skills and Passives in Throne & Liberty a time-consuming endeavour.

You may find it easier to focus on upgrading all of your Green Skills to Blue before you get started with Blue or Purple skills.
