Beginner's Gear Guide for Throne & Liberty

Welcome to our basic gear guide for Throne & Liberty. 

In this guide, we will explain the fundamentals of gear (equipment) in Throne & Liberty, including the types of gear available, the differences between them, as well as gear rarities and traits, and how you can upgrade gear as you progress through the game.

Your Gear, also known as equipment, refers to the items you equip on your character. These impact your character in various ways depending on the type of gear:

Like other items in Throne & Liberty, your gear is split into different tiers of rarity, easily identifiable by the colour of their icon. 

Rarer gear is typically harder to obtain, but is more powerful due to having higher base stats, stronger secondary stat buffs (such as buffing your Strength or Wisdom when the item is equipped), more Trait slots and more Rune slots. 

Gear in Throne & Liberty has the following rarities:

An important aspect of progression in Throne & Liberty is upgrading your Gear, also known as Equipment Enchanting. 

We recommend holding off on this until you've reached max level and farmed some equipment items that you intend to keep and use. 

Upgrading your equipment makes it more powerful, and increases your stats when the item is equipped. For more information about how this works, please check our Equipment Upgrade Guide. 

Many items of equipment in Throne & Liberty will apply various stat buffs when the item is equipped. These buffs are associated with the item itself and cannot be customised in any way. 

Items that are Uncommon or rarer have one or more Trait slots that can be filled with a Trait, granting further stat buffs. Unlike the basic Gear Stats mentioned above, Traits can be changed. 

To unlock additional Trait slots, you need to find the same item again, but the second item must have a different Trait. You can then click the empty trait slot to add a new Trait. 

Some weapons have a passive ability associated with them. For example, the Luquirus' Thorny Edge dagger has a passive ability called Lequirus' Gale Blade, which improves your Base Damage stat by 50 for 3 seconds after you use a Mobility Skill. 

When possible, try to choose a weapon for your build with a passive that synergises with your playstyle. You can view all of the weapons available in the game on our Weapons Database to help you choose.

This isn't typically something you should worry about as a beginner, but it's worth learning about so you can make use of it once you reach max level and begin farming late-game gear. 

Some equipment items belong to an item set. Item Sets grant an additional bonus when wearing a certain number of items that belong to the set. Usually there is a 2-piece bonus and either a 3-piece or 4-piece bonus in each set, but these do vary. 

Some set bonuses are simple stat buffs, while others are a little more complicated and can provide you with an extra effect that triggers under certain conditions. For example, wearing 4 items from the Abyss Slayer set will heal you for 5% of your damage done when you land a Critical Hit. 

You can view all of the Item Sets available in Throne & Liberty on our Item Sets database. We recommend looking through them to find a set that sounds interesting or enjoyable to you, or simply one that suits your playstyle. Then, when you're max level, you might want to think about farming the items from that set for your character. 

When you've got your character to max level and are happy with your equipment, stats and traits, you can still improve your gear further by utilizing Runes. 

We wrote a more detailed guide on Runes if you're interested, but in summary, Runes can be looted and placed in Rune slots on some equipment items to grant an additional stat buff. The best items in the game have three rune slots, but the slots must be unlocked by spending Rune Hammers. 

Each new Rune you find has a small chance to be slightly better than the previous best Rune, allowing for a gradual progression. Runes also have rarities, with rarer Runes being more powerful. 

Slotting Runes in a particular order grants a Rune Synergy, giving an additional bonus. The strength of the synergy bonus depends on the rarity of the runes used.
